Little Bloomers

Do you remember the “Name Game?”  It went something like,

Julie, Julie bo bulie
Banana fanna fo fulie
Me my mo mulie
Julie!

As strange as it may seem, word play like the “Name Game” is more than just a way to pass the time.  It is also an excellent way to develop your child’s preliteracy skills. Playing with words helps children to understand that words are made up of parts (sounds and syllables) and that those parts can be changed to make new words.  Another fun way to play with words is to create simple rhyming sentences such as, “The cat in the hat sat on a mat with a rat,” or “The bug gave the slug a hug on the rug.” Children’s songs and Dr. Seuss books are other terrific ways to expose your children to rhyming words.

How about playing some word games in the car?  Think up as many words as you can that start with the letter “B,” or look out the window and find something that starts with the “ssss” sound. You can break words into parts by asking, “What is cupcake without cake?”  Of course it’s just “cup.”  You can even make up new words.  What do you call an animal that is half giraffe and half rooster?  A girooster!

It may seem silly but these are great ways for your child to develop an understanding that words are made up of sounds and syllables.  So go ahead and have some fun and watch your child’s language bloom.

Today we practiced Mat Man and read the Dr. Seuss book, The Foot Book. We also practiced cutting and then glued the paper onto our initial. We learned a song about the color green. We also worked on drawing shapes. Then we turned the circle into a cat and the square into a window. Ms. Kathy even turned a triangle into a volcano!

It's important to look at what our hands are doing.

We start our squares at the top.

Squares can turn into windows.

It's important to put your name
(or initial) on your papers.

Today we met a couple of new friends... Mat Man & MoMo!

We read a book called, Two Eyes, A Nose and a Mouth. Then we built a man on a mat... This is Mat Man!

Mat Man not only helps us learn about our bodies,he is made from lines and curves, which also help us with learning to write our letters.
As we sang the Mat Man song, we found the same parts on our bodies...

Mat Man has one head, made from 2 curves.
Mat Man has 2 eyes, 1 nose, 1 mouth & 2 ears.

So do we!

Mat Man has 1 body, 2 arms, 2 legs...

Mat Man even has a belly button!! Me, too!!

And, now, meet Momo!!

We had fun fun playing, Look at Momo, as we practiced "looking" with our eyes, at a speaker. When we used our eyes to look at Momo, he made a very silly sound :)
